Falafel Balls Recipe
Everyone likes these fried falafel balls, but not everyone knows how easy they are to make. In case you guys are one of those people, here’s my version of that delicious middle eastern appetizer called falafel balls or simply falafels. This same recipe will be good for making falafel burgers, a great vegan / vegetarian meal.
The main ingredient is chickpeas, keep in mind that canned chickpeas can’t be used to make falafel balls, since they have too much moisture and as you try to fry them , they’ll crumble, so make sure to follow that note. 1 ⅓ cups dry garbanzo beans (chickpeas ), place in cold water overnight
2-3 tbs scallions or onions, sliced coarsely
2-3 tbs fresh dill, parsley, or cilantro , I’d use anything on hand
1-2 cloves of garlic
1 tsp ground black pepper
⅓ tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp dry mint
1 tsp sumac or a juice of one small lemon
1 tsp coriander
¼ tsp ground cumin
½ tsp red chili flakes, leave out if you don’t like spicy
½ tsp baking soda
1 ½ tbs flour
Salt to taste
You will need vegetable oil for frying (I use grapeseed oil)
Start by draining the chickpeas, make sure they are completely dry, pat dry with paper towel if needed
In a food processor combine:all the ingredients and spices except for the chickpeas, flour, salt and soda
Process until smooth
Add the rest of your ingredients and process until coarse crumb consistency, refer to YouTube tutorial for more details
You can cover the mixture with a plastic and set in the fridge for 30-45 minutes to set or start frying immediately
Start preheating the oil to 375° F and using a cookie scoop form falafel balls
Fry 5-6 minutes and enjoy while still warm
