Khavits Recipe

From my most favorite Armenian cuisine a delicious, very filling breakfast called Khavits.

It may not be the healthiest meal of all time, but for me; any food that’s a sweet reminder of your childhood , is guilt free and you can afford to give yourself the luxury of tasting that food once in awhile. This is a greatly satisfying meal, that can keep you going for very long hours . In fact, Khavits was a meal they’d serve to mothers who just delivered a baby, saying ; it’ll help them to regain their energy and strength. Not sure if it was a true magical meal, but until these days, Khavits is served to new moms very often.






Khavits is a simple combination of flour, clarified butter, salt and sugar. Even though in my YouTube tutorial I tried making it slightly healthier, by using organic whole wheat flour, I’d still recommend to go with regular all purpose flour , to get the authentic taste of that delicious meal.

This is non recipe meal , I should say , most importantly you follow the consistency. So be sure to watch YouTube tutorial to get more info on how to make it .

Khavits Recipe - Armenian Cuisine

Ingredients 

Recipe will serve 1 person

1tbs ghee (clarified butter) , I have a YouTube tutorial in this

2-3 tbs all purpose flour

Honey or sugar to taste

Pinch of salt

1-2 cups of boiling hot water, for thicker consistency use less water, for thinner ; more

Directions 

Start by boiling the water , set aside

In a small saucepan melt butter and add flour until a very thick custard consistency is formed

Cook on medium to low heat by constantly stirring

This mixture can burn very quickly so be sure to keep an eye and stir to fry everything evenly




As the mixture turns to bright brown color start adding hot water a little bit at a time

Keep stirring as you add the water

Add enough to reach a smooth, lump free, thin custard consistency , it’ll thicken as it cooks

Cover the lid halfway and allow to cook 4-5 minutes

Add honey , salt and cook another 1-2 minutes

Serve hot !

Additionally you can drizzle Khavits with extra honey, crushed walnuts or pecans
